The UK legal limit for tyre tread depth is 1.6mm – we, along with many tyre manufacturers, recommend that you consider changing your tyres before they become this close to the legal limit. The tyre tread depth has a huge bearing on your stopping distances – the difference between a tread depth of 3mm & 1.6mm is scary to say the least – especially in poor weather conditions.
You can face points on your licence and a fine if you do not adhere to the minimum requirements. To be honest, we’re more concerned about the safety implications of low tread depth – and you should be too.
You can check your tyre tread depth with a 20 pence piece, if you can see the inner ring then your tread depth is getting to around 3mm & you should think about getting your tyres changed soon.
